Hurricane Wilma

After five days of persistent torrential rains the system close to Jamaica has become a hurricane, Hurricane Wilma. The good news is that Hurricane Wilma is finally moving away from Jamaica. The bad news is that the outer bands are expected to continue producing heavy rains over the island for the next 24 to 36 hours.
‘Wi cawnt tek no more’. Already the earth is super saturated. Flooding has been reported in many parishes. Some areas have reported up to seven feet of water. Over 300 persons are presently in shelters across the island.

Follow up:

Severe damages to roads and properties have been reported in Clarendon, St. Catherine, St. Thomas, St. Elizabeth, Montego Bay and St. Mary. Bridges have collapsed and roads are impassable. The heavy rains have also caused several land slides. The agriculture sector has also been hard hit. So far it is not possible to assess the full damage as the rains continue.
All schools were closed today and will remain closed until Thursday at which time an assessment will be done. Some persons were not able to get to work today because of flooded roadways. Some businesses allowed employees who braved the weather and went to work but experienced difficulties to leave early.
Even with all the rains and flooding the criminal element was still evident. The gunmen and thieves still found time to conduct their evil deeds. Within the last 24 hours 2 persons were shot and killed in two separate incidents in the Grants Pen Road area. In Port Maria police arrested persons from two vehicles loaded with stolen green bananas.
It is not over as Hurricane Wilma is in no hurry. The last report I heard had the winds up to 80 miles per hour moving WNW at 7 miles per hour. We have learnt however that when it comes to Mother Nature any card can play.
